Addis Ababa is the largest city in Ethiopia, and its political and administrative capital. It is one of the fastest growing cities in Africa.

The population increased from 392,000 in 1950 to 3,316,000 in 2015. UN-HABITAT estimates that by 2030 the population will grow to 5,851,000 (ca. 80% increase in population). The city is home to ca. 21% of Ethiopia’s urban population. Urban population density (population/km²) is 8,300/km².

Addis Ababa faces several urbanisation challenges including uncontrolled city expansion, rural land conversion, informal transformation of the urban periphery, coordination and equity of city renewal initiatives and city management.
