Nairobi has one of the highest urban growth rates per annum in Africa with annual growth of 2.8% between 2000 and 2015. The population has increased from 137,000 in 1950 to 4,070,000 in 2015. UN-HABITAT estimates that by 2030 Nairobi’s population will grow to 7,140,000 (ca. 82% increase in population over a 15-year period).

The city is home to 33.9% of Kenya’s urban population. Urban agglomeration population density is 8,000/km². Nairobi faces urbanisation challenges such as inadequate housing and expanding informal settlements, lack of coordinated planning and confusion between types of development zoning and historic mismanagement of the privatisation of public transportation. Motorisation rates are high in Nairobi.
