ASAP Uganda

Kampala has experienced rapid development over the last decade. Whilst the city has a comparatively small urban population compared to East African neighbours, it has one of the highest average annual population growth rates in Africa.

The population has increased from 95,000 in 1950 to 2,012,000 in 2015. UN-HABITAT estimates that by 2030 the population will grow to 3,939,000 (ca. 103% increase in population). The city is home to 31.5% of Uganda’s urban population. Data for urban agglomeration population density is missing.

Kampala faces numerous urbanisation challenges including a rapidly growing population, the influence and intervention of the national government in city management, limited institutional capacity and financial resources to provide urban service. Motorisation rates are intermediate in Kampala compared to other study cities.
